Fun Facts

Oranges are a perfect mix - or hybrid - of the pomelo and mandarin. The first oranges were really bitter and no one ate them! Their scent, however, was divine, and that's how oranges got their name -- from the Sanskrit naranga which means fragrant. Nowadays there are more than 600 varieties of oranges, including the Washington navel. Washington navels are like oranges with belly buttons! Sailors used to plant oranges along their trade routes so they could eat them to prevent scurvy. About 25 billion oranges grow annually in the U.S. We eat about 15% of them and the rest are used to make OJ.

Star Power

Oranges are practically synonymous with vitamin C, with 100 percent of the daily RDA in every juicy fruit. The phytonutrients and flavonoids in oranges can pulverize cold viruses and fortify the immune system. They also work their antioxidant power on inflammation and cell damage to help prevent heart disease and cancer. Rich in fiber, oranges do their part for healthy digestion. Did you know that orange juice is the most popular juice in the U.S.? (Orange you glad we told you?)

Quick Preps

PREPARE: Peel oranges and divide into wedges. Mandarins and clementines are very kid friendly because they are easy to peel.

  • Eat as a snack or dessert after dinner.
  • Chop oranges and add to salads and wraps.
  • Add chopped oranges to oatmeal and yogurt.
  • Make fruit kabobs with oranges, mango, berries, cantaloupe and grapes.
