Fun Facts
Popular since antiquity, this fanciful fruit is called an aggregate, because it's actually made up of multiple drupelets. Each juicy drupelet forms around a tiny seed and fuses to the other 80-100 drupelets to create one mouthwatering blackberry. And while most fruit is green before it ripens, blackberries aren't green, they're red. This factoid let to an expression used by farmers and storytellers that blackberries are red when they're green!
Star Power
When it comes to antioxidants, blackberries rule! Practically overflowing with antioxidant polyphenolic compounds like ellegic acid, tannins, quercetin and athocyanins, eating blackberries crushes cell damaging free radicals and can help protect against aging, inflammation, and keep the brain healthy. Vitamins and minerals work hard, too. Vitamin C pumps up the immune system, fiber works on healthy digestion, and vitamin K supports cell production and eyesight. Did you know that blackberries contain more antioxidants than any other fruit?
